Beginning Spinning-Using a Wheel ~ January 24th, 2pm to 5pm OR March 21st, 10am to 1pm
Learn how to spin your own yarn on a wheel!
Instructor - Jey Fell
Spinning on a wheel opens up a world of yarn design and generally allows spinning greater quantities of yarn faster than on a spindle.
This 3 hour class will cover the basics of spinning yarn on a wheel, including:
- Spinning singles and plying on a wheel
- Different types of wheels, and how they operate
- Wheel adjustments
- S- vs Z-twist
- Finishing the yarn by thwacking
- Resources and next steps for wheel spinning
Students will leave the class with a mini hank of yarn that they have spun themselves.
Pre-requisites: Students must have taken the drop spinning class OR be comfortable drafting fiber for spinning.
Default wheels available for the class are all double-treadle Schacht wheels, requiring two feet to operate. If students do not feel comfortable operating a double-treadle, please contact the shop/instructor before purchasing a spot in the class. We can arrange for a single-treadle or electric wheel for the class, depending on availability.
Materials: Double-treadle Schacht wheels will be provided for the duration of the class (Matchless, Sidekick, or Ladybug). An Ashford Kiwi is also available for use. Students may bring their own wheel if they prefer, but should contact the instructor in advance to review the wheel.
1 oz of roving from a Maryland farm will be provided at no additional cost
